The Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in recent years—especially for those looking to enhance their figure with fuller, more defined curves and a balanced silhouette. As a plastic surgeon in the Dominican Republic, one of the most common questions I receive is: How long does recovery take after a BBL? In this article, I’ll answer that question and others you may have, so you can make an informed decision.
What is a BBL?
A BBL combines liposuction with fat transfer to the buttocks. First, fat is harvested from areas where it’s unwanted—like the abdomen, flanks, back, or thighs. That fat is then purified and carefully injected into the buttocks to add volume and contour. The result not only enhances the shape of your buttocks, but also slims and reshapes other parts of your body for a natural, proportionate look.

Recovery time varies from patient to patient, but in general, you’ll need about 2 to 3 weeks of relative rest. During the first 7 to 10 days, it’s crucial to avoid sitting directly on your buttocks. I recommend using a BBL pillow to shift weight to your thighs when sitting, and sleeping on your stomach or side.
By the third week, many patients are ready to return to work, as long as their job doesn’t require physical strain. Keep in mind that final results won’t be fully visible until 3 to 6 months post-op, as some of the transferred fat is naturally reabsorbed and your body needs time to settle and reduce swelling.
Am I a good candidate for a BBL?
The ideal candidate for a BBL is in good health, follows a healthy lifestyle, and has enough fat in other areas of the body to safely harvest for transfer. It’s also important to have realistic expectations. A BBL is not a substitute for proper diet and exercise—it’s a way to enhance your natural proportions.
Are BBL results permanent?
BBL results can last for many years, especially if you maintain a stable weight. The fat cells that survive the transfer behave just like any other fat in your body. So if you gain or lose significant weight, it can affect the size and shape of your buttocks. Staying active and eating a balanced diet are key to maintaining your BBL results long term.
If I gain weight, will I lose my BBL?
Not necessarily. If you gain weight moderately, the transferred fat can grow along with your natural fat. However, dramatic weight changes can alter your results—both in the buttocks and in the areas where liposuction was performed. Consistency in your lifestyle is essential to preserving your outcome.

Both options have their benefits. A BBL is ideal for patients who want a more natural look and feel and have enough fat for transfer. Gluteal implants, on the other hand, may be better suited for very slender patients who don’t have sufficient fat to harvest. As a plastic surgeon in the Dominican Republic, I always provide personalized assessments to determine which option is best for each patient’s unique body and goals.
Is all the fat that’s removed Used?
No. Not all of the fat extracted during liposuction is used for the transfer. The fat must go through a purification process, which removes excess fluids and any cells that won’t survive. Only the healthiest, most viable fat is re-injected to ensure better survival, long-lasting results, and patient safety.
A Brazilian Butt Lift is a great option for those who want to naturally enhance their curves. If you’re considering this procedure, always consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who prioritizes your safety and guides you through every step of the process. At my practice in the Dominican Republic, I’ll be happy to help you determine if you’re a good candidate and support you on your journey to achieving your dream results.
